INFLUENCE OF DRAINAGE METHODS ON SOYBEAN DEVELOPMENT IN LOWLANDS REA
Rosso,Ricardo B.; Peiter,Marcia X.; Robaina,Adroaldo D.; Ben,Luis H. Bahú; Mezzomo,Wellington.
ABSTRACT The need for crop rotation and profitability in lowland areas are the two main reasons for the introduction of soybean cultivation in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. These areas have poor natural drainage, which impedes proper soybean growth. In this sense, this study aimed to assess the efficiency of using broad base ridges in comparison to the surface drainage for soybean cultivation in lowlands. The study was conducted during the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 growing seasons in São João do Polêsine, RS, Brazil. The assessed drainage methods were the use of broad base ridges with different width dimensions (22.5, 15.0, and 7.5 m) and surface drainage. The results showed that the shoot dry matter and leaf area index have similar behavior. The...

Large gas hydrate accumulations on the eastern Nankai Trough inferred from new high-resolution 2-D seismic data ArchiMer
Nouze, Herve; Henry, P; Noble, M; Martin, V; Pascal, G.
Previous studies have revealed the presence of a widespread Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR) on the eastern Nankai slope, as well as the occurrence of enigmatic high amplitude reflections that extend well above the BSR. New high-resolution 2-D seismic data were collected on the eastern Nankai slope, during the French-Japanese SFJ cruise in year 2000 and AVA analyses of the enigmatic reflectors are conducted. At the studied location, these analyses suggest that high amplitude anomalies above the BSR delineate the top of gas hydrate rich sediments. Several tens % of the sediment porosity would be filled with gas hydrates between the BSR and a sharp boundary 30 to 60 m above. To account for these observations, we propose that an invasion by free gas of the...

The contribution of fire damage to restricting high mountain Polylepis australis forests to ravines: Insights from an un-replicated comparison Ecología austral
Alinari,Julieta; von Müller,Axel; Renison,Daniel.
High mountain forests are often restricted to ravines and much debate has existed on the explanations of this distribution, with arguments ranging from abiotic site conditions being more favorable in ravines to there being reduced herbivory or reduced fre frequency and damage in ravines. We aim at understanding the contribution of fre damage and provide data to help test the hypothesis that fires are less damaging and that trees recover faster in ravines as compared to ridge sites. We evaluated crown damage, post-fire survival, regeneration by resprouts and seeds, and browsed stems in burned and unburned control Polylepis australis trees situated in a ravine and in a ridge forest in the west slope of the mountains of Central Argentina. The proportion of...

The pilot project "Patterns and processes of the ecosystems of the northern Mid-Atlantic": aims, strategy and status ArchiMer
Bergstad, Oa; Godo, Or.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the target of an emerging international ecosystem study under the Census of marine life programme. This pilot project shall gather new knowledge on biodiversity, distribution patterns, and ecological processes, and the overriding aim is "to describe and understand the patterns of distribution, abundance and trophic relationships of the organisms inhabiting the mid-oceanic North Atlantic, and identify and model ecological processes that cause variability in these patterns". The project will focus on pelagic, benthopelagic and epibenthic macrofauna, and analyse distribution and abundance patterns in relation to the abiotic and biotic environment, as well as trophic relationships and life history strategies. Fish, crustaceans,...

Variations in axial morphology, segmentation, and seafloor roughness along the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge between 56 degrees S and 66 degrees S ArchiMer
Ondreas, Helene; Aslanian, Daniel; Geli, Louis; Olivet, Jean-louis; Briais, Anne.
The spreading rate at the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (PAR) increases rapidly from 54 mm/yr near Pitman Fracture Zone (FZ) up to 76 mm/yr near Udintsev FZ, resulting in three domains of axial morphology: an axial valley south of Pitman FZ, an axial high north of Saint Exupery FZ, and in between, the transitional domain extends over 650 km. It comprises sections of ridge with an axial valley or an axial high and generally displays a very low cross-sectional relief. It is also characterized by two propagating rifts. Two domains of different seafloor roughness appear south of Udintsev FZ: east of 157 degreesW these two domains are separated by a 1000-km V-shaped boundary. West of 157 degreesW, the boundary approximately coincides with Chron 3a or Chron 4. The...
